Alcohol licence fees are slashed Community groups won’t have to pay so much to sell alcohol at fundraising events after the Tasman District Council made two key changes to its liquor licensing regulations. The cost of a special licence to sell alcohol at events ranges from $63 to $575 depending on the number of people attending. The organisers of community fundraisers have been critical of the “excessive costs” and council has responded by agreeing to reduce their charges. The cost of a licence for a large community or charity event with over 400 people will decrease from $575 to $207 while a licence for a medium-sized event with 100 to 400 people will drop from $207, to $63.20. There will not be any changes for community events with less than 100 people or any commercial event. “For events like the Brightwater Wine and Food

Festival or Sarau Festival, it will mean that more of the fundraising goes to the community,” council regulatory services coordinator Graham Caradus says. “It’s seems a lot fairer and it’s also in line with the policy adopted by the other councils in the top of the South Island.” However, Graham says council can’t reduce the cost of a special licence for community events with less than 100 people because of government legislation. A minimum cost of $63.20 will be charged for all small events. Graham says the second change addressed two anomalies in the government’s regulations that were highlighted in letters council received, including

House sports injects colour and noise Red, blue, green and yellow hordes stormed across the Waimea College playing fields last Friday for the school’s House Sports day. Each year, the school’s four houses take to the sports field for a day of chants, sport and fun activities. Cooper, Sheppard and Rutherford houses themed their chants on cheerleaders, sailors and the jungle, but at the end of the day Hillary’s daycare-styled performance stole the show. Hillary house captains, Casey Ogilvie and Mardi McBride say they couldn’t be prouder.

“It’s a bit overwhelming right now, we put in so many hours throughout the whole holidays and to see the whole house come together, it’s awesome,” Casey says. Mardi says yellow plan to dominate the whole year. “We want lots more wins.” New principal Scott Haines says the house sports are a great way to start the year. “It’s been a fantastic day, I’ve really enjoyed the competition and camaraderie of all the houses, and it’s awesome to see this really cool house spirit,” Scott says. “The school I’ve come from had a

really strong house sports culture, but this is just a whole different level,” says Scott. “In a big school like this with 1555 kids, it’s a really great way to break that down into smaller units and have not just school pride, but pride in your house too.” The houses were judged on creativity, colour, signs, chants and bribes. “What clinched it for Hillary today was the full package, their chant was awesome, they had a really original, well-thoughtout song, they were creative and just really nailed it,” says Scott.

one from Upper Moutere’s company Peckham’s Cider. The letter pointed out the company was being charged the same offlicence fee as a large wine retailer and that those costs didn’t reflect their risk rating. Council agreed the costs were unfair and now plans to charge Peckham’s based on a very low risk rating. One of the company’s owners Caroline Peckham says the change will reduce the cost of their annual licence fee from $391 to $161 and their threeyearly reapplication fee from $609 to $368. “We are a very small local business that only sells on-line and we were being charged the same a big wine supplier that sells on-line and at the cellar door,” Caroline says. “It was a very unfair situation so we are

delighted with the council’s response - the reduced fees are going to make a huge difference to our business.” In another change, breweries and distilleries that sell alcohol at the cellar door, or remotely through phone or internet sales, will now pay the same for an off-licence as wineries cellar doors. Although the changes will come at a cost to the ratepayer because annual revenue from licensing fees will decrease by about $10,000, chair of the environment and planning committee Stu Bryant says “it’s a really positive move and should help a number of community groups”. “We listened to community feedback and decided to lower the fees for two categories of special licences,” Stu says. “Now it will be fairer and cheaper for community groups and remote off-licence sales.”

The upgrade of the Richmond BP is progressing with the old forecourt of the Queen St service station being demolished this week. The upgraded Richmond site is scheduled to open in April. The new 24-hour operation will feature a BP Superwash, a full range of fuels, widened lanes for easier access, upgraded bathroom facilities and a Wild Bean Cafe. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Protesters’ rat taunt ‘was a step too far’

WEDNESDAY 17 February 2016

Andrew Board

Protesters targeted two local supermarkets over a pay dispute on the weekend, but the use of giant rat to depict the owners of Nelson New World and Pak ‘n Save Richmond has been questioned. The “community protests” were held at both supermarkets on Saturday and Sunday and was organised by members of the First Union, which represents supermarket employees. Around 18 protesters were at New World on Saturday morning and six turned up to the Pak ‘n Save later that day. Organiser Rachel Boyack says most of the protesters were local, however, only a couple were actual employees at the supermarket. She says that’s because it wasn’t an official strike, so employees couldn’t leave their workplace to join it. The union is protesting over pay rates, which they say are less for South Island employees. “These two stores have made no attempt to bargain with the union in good faith. Instead they have played silly games with us. They say South Island workers should not be

They were handing out flyers attacking the owners of the stores and urging shoppers to email the owners. Slogans had been designed for both stores, “New Wages” and “Pak ‘n Slave”. The majority of shoppers spoken to by the Weekly say they support workers but they didn’t like the rat being used to attack store owners.

Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Dot Kettle says she doesn’t understand the rat taunt. “I think it’s a step too far and I think it’s disappointing. It seems to me a very personal and unnecessary attack on individuals. Most people would recognise that most businesses are actually run by small business owners who work incredibly hard to create employment opportunities in a sustainable way. Everybody respects the right to protest, but I would like to see us being able to do that in a mature and responsible fashion.”

ON NOW!

It was a perfect night for Nelson Opera in the Park, with 7500 people turning out to enjoy a first class lineup of New Zealand musicians. The event was once again a huge success, says organiser Pete Rainey. “But you can’t really go wrong, people just love the opportunity to come out and relax in the park and listen to some nice music.” The crowds came bearing blankets, chairs, picnics and a glass of bubbly or two, and settled in for two and a half hours of opera and contemporary style music at Trafalgar Park on Saturday night. Since the councils decision to run Opera in the Park every two years, it has become a much anticipated event, with the public lining up well before the gates opened at 5:30pm to get the best view of the stage and screen. There was no particular crowd favourite amongst the lineup, which included singer Anna Leese, Jared Holt, Jubilation Choir, Jackie Clarke and kiwi icon Dave Dobbyn.

People want wide footpaths, narrow roads to slow traffic and well-designed, pedestrianfriendly street furniture included in the redesign of Richmond’s main street when it gets a makeover next year. The Tasman District Council is planning to start excavating Queen St in August to replace the street’s ageing stormwater system and lower its profile to improve flood protection in Richmond. The $13.9 million project also incorporates funding to give Queen St a makeover and council has been receiving plenty of public feedback on the streetscape design options. Council’s programme delivery manager Russell McGuigan says “there has been a lot of interest” in the Queen St redevelopment during the public submission process which ends on February 29. “We had 57 submissions through Richmond Unlimited’s survey but we have also had strong interest from the general public who made 30 submissions,” Russell says. “We have also obtained lots of informal comments from dropin sessions at council, the mall and library.” Russell says many of the submissions want Queen St to be pedestrian-friendly with wide footpaths and well-designed street furniture that encourages people to stop and talk and rest. A narrow road to slow traffic and safe road crossings were also highlighted in some of the submissions. “Replacing the stormwater and lowering the profile of Queen St are the biggest parts of this project because you can’t have floods in the town’s main street. But a lot of the people are focusing on what it will look like on top and they are excited about all the changes. “They want to Queen St to be a welcoming and friendly place to walk and shop and stop and talk. That’s what city centres are all about - they are places where you can stay for a while and enjoy the surroundings.” Richmond councillor Michael Higgins, who joined Russell at an open day on the project in the Richmond Mall last Friday, says the Queen St upgrade “will raise the standard for Richmond”. “People are very supportive of this project. They realise it needs to be done to stop the flooding and it’s long overdue.” However, Russell says the year-long upgrade will be disruptive for businesses on Queen St and it will be essential for council to keep them well informed. Council is working closely with business group Richmond Unlimited and is in the process of “door-knocking” every business on Queen St to discuss the project. “We’ll be establishing a point of contact for every business and getting their details so we can keep them right up-to-date with any developments,” he says. Russell says construction is likely to start in August and will take about a year to finish. He says they plan to complete most of the work in stages to minimise the impact on individual businesses and will stop over the holiday period and then resume in February. A second open day was held at the Richmond Library on Monday.

Ministry of Inspiration comes to Richmond

Simon Bloomberg A Nelson based-educational trust that mentors youth in the art of science and Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology are joining forces to provide creative educational experiences in an “out of the box” environment. The Ministry of Inspiration held its first Inspire Education class for 15 students at NMIT’s Richmond campus last Tuesday. The classes are designed for eight to 12 year olds who want to “explore, create and discuss inspiring concepts over a full school day”, and will be held every Tuesday and Wednesday. “Inspire Education classes are a brand new offering, and provide a weekly time for youngsters to connect with like-minded youth who want to explore and create in a very ‘out of the box environment,” the Ministry of Education’s president Leanne Pressman says. “We are thrilled with this chance to partner with NMIT to provide a weekly innovative experience that families have been clamouring for. “It’s a chance for the students to take one science topic for a whole day and really go into it in depth. We are hoping that this is the beginning of whole year of classes, but at this stage it’s definitely for term one.” Teacher of the first class for 10-12 year old students, Linda Rogers, helped the children study the dynamics of surface tension and polarity of water using bubbles. Although there was a considerable amount of science underlining the lesson, Henley School’s Maddie Cornelisen, 10, says it was also practical and fun. “We are learning lots about surface tension and how bubbles form, but we are allowed to blows lots of bubbles. It’s not just learning - it’s fun too.” The Ministry of Inspiration is privately funded by the children’s parents and businesses from around the region.

The show got off to a good start on Friday with the Lake Hop and Friday Night Cruz, which beat last year’s record by four cars with 240 entries. The public show then got underway on Saturday and Sunday, attracting hundreds of car owners from clubs around the country, along with several food stalls and trade sites. Ian’s Ford has come a long way since it was picked out of a Belgrove paddock and restored. Although he bought it when the majority of the work had already been done, he has added to its restoration journey in order to keep it on the road, including brakes, tow bar, hub caps and carburettor. Even though it was well rotten when it was found, the Ford still maintains a large part of its original engine which was also restored after 40 years of neglect. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

The popular wharf at Wakefield Quay could be closed to the public after several trespass notices have been issued for people jumping off moored boats that don’t belong to them. Nelson harbour-master Dave Duncan says seven trespass orders have been issued in the past month and many others have been spoken to after they were spotted climbing on boats berthed at Wakefield Quay and then jumping from them. Dave says jumping off the wharf has happened for years, but when swimmers climb on other people’s boats, it becomes a problem. “We open the wharf up so people can jump off it, we understand that it’s an activity that people have enjoyed for a long time. I certainly don’t want to close this wharf off but as the harbour-master my hands are tied because I’m responsible for people’s safety,” he says. CCTV footage has captured people climbing in the Haulashore Island ferry, the NMIT life boat and a private launch berthed at the

Dave says the NMIT boat is around six metres in the air and if someone was to fall off it “there is no coming back”. He says if the practice doesn’t stop he will have to close the wharf. “I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. I could close access right off but that would disadvantage a lot of people who aren’t responsible for this misbehaviour.” The wharf is popular with

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: What money advice

would you give to people considering tertiary study?

A: Tertiary study can be a great

investment in your future. Here are nine tips for a money savvy student:

 Do a budget so you know how much money you will need weekly.  Get really clear about which expenses are ‘needs’ and which are ‘wants’.  Look for additional income while studying.  Borrow only what you need.  Avoid extra debt like student credit cards and overdrafts.  If studying looks unaffordable, consider a gap year of working and saving.  Know the value of your qualification. Will your earning potential be increased?  Consider how long it will take you to pay back the loan.  Know that you will have to pay your loan back, there is no way out of it.

Richmond’s sixth op shop opens The Nelson SPCA opened its second op shop in the region after moving into a new premises in the central business district of Richmond this week. The SPCA has successfully operated an op shop on Vanguard St in Nelson for the last four years and on Monday opened the doors on its second outlet at 273 Queen St. It has moved into the shop previously operated by the Salvation Army’s second-hand store which has moved to another premises on Queen St. Nelson SPCA centre manager Donna Walzl says their Nelson op shop has been “fabulous” and consequently they decided to open another shop in Richmond. She says the Nelson op shop has provided a steady source of revenue to help keep the SPCA operating in the region. “We can’t rely on bequest and donations anymore - they are not enough to keep us going,” Donna says. “The Nelson op shop goes a long way to supporting us so we decided to give this one a go.”

It is the sixth charity to open a second-hand shop in Richmond, which is fast becoming the op shop capital of the top of the South Island. The IHC, Salvation Army, Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul and Nelson Hospice already have second-hand shops in the town. Donna says the shop had a “soft opening” on Monday and they plan to hold an official opening “once we have found our feet in Richmond”. The shop will sell second-hand clothes, kitchenware, homeward, toys and games for children, books and a good range of animal products. Anyone who would like to donate items to the SPCA op shop can phone the shop on 5445751 or the Nelson SPCA headquarters on 547 7171, or drop them off at the shop during opening hours. The SPCA also runs a pick-up service for donated items. The new Richmond shop will be open from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Just a thought... The life that each of us have been entrusted with is an amazing opportunity. In our younger years especially we often feel bullet proof and invincible, and think the life ahead of us will go on forever. However, anyone with a good number of years under their belt soon realises that the years race on by and it doesn’t take long to understand the fragility of life. Recently, I was admitted to Nelson Hospital to have my appendix out. It was a bit of a surprise but the operation ahead seemed very routine so I was feeling relaxed about it. Keyhole surgery, in and out over night, all good. However, it wasn’t till I woke up on a ventilator, 14 hours later, hooked up to tubes and cords in all sorts of places that I realised that maybe all did not go as planned. Only when numerous medical professionals all told me individually “it was so close”,

and that it was amazing that I was still alive, did I realise the gravity of the situation. It turned out upon receivJono Martin, ing the ansenior pastor, aesthetic my R i c h m o n d body went New Life. into anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock and pretty much shut down. One of the professionals commented that if several “lucky” things had not come together then I would have been dead on the table. I commented that there certainly were a number of people praying for me at that time, to which he replied. “We we certainly do acknowledge the God factor in this situation because it was so close.” For any of us, life can be like this. All good, cruising along, and then out of the blue something happens that completely

threatens our security, our hope, our health or even our very lives. Many people have events happen in their lives that cause them to rethink all that they value and have been focusing on. As a local pastor, may I please encourage you. God made you to know Him. This life is just a taste of the eternal life to come. The relationship with God that we were created to know has been broken by sin but God offers us the best opportunity ever, to accept his son Jesus Christ as the Lord of our lives and experience forgiveness from sin and the beginning of a whole new life in relationship with God. Don’t wait till you nearly die to consider these things. Today, you can pray and ask Jesus to come into your life, to forgive you and to show you how to live for Him. If you would like to find out more about this, I invite you to visit a church near you.

Playcentres prepare for the Big Play Out Nelson Playcentres Association are holding a Big Play Out to celebrate the value of play this Saturday. X-it Ant - for exterior ant control

X-it Ant

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer now here, it is time to act and control the population on and around your property. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product.

Benefits of using X-It Ant:  Efficacy against all ant species in New Zealand including Argentine and Darwin Ants.  Can be used on all exterior surfaces including trees, lawns, concrete paths and the exterior of buildings.  Rainfast after 1 hour of sunlight.  Control of ants for months, depending on the surface treated.  Forms a non-repellent barrier that ensures uptake of chemical when walked on by ants.

www.keyindustries.co.nz

The last few seasons have seen the use of a now tried-and-proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X-It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X-IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. Ant colony control is achieved once the queens are dead. You must know where the ants are for successful treatment, so a full inspection of the property is

required, so check all these places: Sleepers, trees, curb and channelling, driveways, paths, gardens, compost heaps, all fences including the wire or boards, rails and posts, pergolas and plants growing on them. Firewood piles, downpipes, rubbish bins, bbq’s, outdoor furniture, pot plants, vehicles, decks and any trees over-hanging the boundary. The best time to look for ants is when the temperature is warm, before it is too hot.

1. X-It Ant™: 225ml pack (Only use OUTDOORS).

Spray all ant trails, path edges, driveway edges, curb & channelling, fences including posts, rails, pergola posts, etc. Tree trunks require a minimum 1 metre band up and around them. Bushes / plants that touch the house need to be pruned so that they no longer do so. Spray a 1 metre band up and out all the way around the exterior of the house.

2. Bi Force® Granules: 5kg or 500g shaker pack In gardens, long grass, compost, and any areas where X-It Ant™ cannot be applied successfully.

3. Dust 2 Dust™: 100g puffer pack Use for the killing of ants in wall and ceiling cavities, cracks and crevices, under inaccessible decking, under cupboards and into retaining walls, also great for Wasps. Business Update. Adv.

Volunteers wanted for ‘bioblitz’ Kate Russell Nelson nature lovers are invited to come and discover the biodiversity of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary next weekend, in a 24-hour “bioblitz.” The purpose of the bioblitz, which is being run in conjunction with Friends of the Maitai, is to discover and document what lives in the sanctuary. Scientists and professionals will join members of the public in the blitz which kicks off at 9am next Saturday. Rick Field, project coordinator and educator at the sanctuary, says they will monitor five areas, covering the forest floor, canopy and the Brook Stream. “We’re hoping to monitor fish and bats as there hasn’t been much monitoring done in the heart of the sanctuary,” he says. “But, you never know what’s going to turn up.” Rick is also encouraging people who want to participate to download a free app called ‘iNaturalist’ on their smartphone or tablet. The app allows people to record observations with photos and GPS locations and share them with other users. “The app is the thing that will save a lot of time, as we can record everything,” says Rick. “It will help us collate and catalogue all the observations and gives us a really good overview of what’s there.”

Rick is hoping to get schools on board too, with a programme called ‘My School, My Sanctuary,’ and he was at Richmond School last week doing a “mini bioblitz.” “It’s really important just to take notice of the natural world that’s all around us and getting the kids outside in nature to observe,” he says. Rick says they are encouraging the public to attend during daylight hours only, and the late night observations will be left to the professionals. He recommends people come armed with a smart phone or tablet, sensible foot-

• Valentine’s Day was on Sunday and for several weeks leading up to the big day we had a huge love heart in the mall. The heart was made by the good folk at the Waimea Menzshed and it was totally covered in notes of love from our wonderful shoppers. Thank you for all the lovely declarations of love. We hope everyone had a great day. • The pedestrian crossings and safe zones by the Fresh Choice entrance are now completed. This will make it safer for people to get from their cars to the Mall.

• The Vodafone Warriors are coming to the Richmond Mall. The team is in town to play a pre-season game on Saturday and will be at the Mall on Friday, February 19, between 2-2.45pm, in front of the Vodafone store. This is a great chance to come and meet the country’s top league players ahead of their first ever game in Nelson.

• The raised walkway by the eastern entrance is on track to be completed by the end of February, when we will be looking at the doing some landscaping. Some car parks have been out of use while this work has been ongoing, but the safety for shoppers will be greatly improved, so we’re really looking forward to it being finished. • Easter is on the horizon and we are planning a lovely Easter display and activity for kiddies. Details are still being finalised, but it will involve kids being able to win Easter eggs after finishing the Easter activity. We’ll have more on Easter and School Holiday fun in next month’s column.

New stock is also much appreciated, although it must be in good condition for its new owners, and if it’s a large item, the ReStore offers a pick up service at no cost. There is a drop off point available for people to donate their unwanted belongings, but the store asks that anyone planning on doing this contact them beforehand on 547 4626. The team is also happy to offer a delivery service for a small fee.

Habitat for Humanity believes that everyone should have a decent place to live and you can do your part for local Habitat housing projects by simply supporting the ReStore, because ‘every sale bangs a nail’. The homes that were dedicated last Saturday were the 22nd and 23rd in the region, which is a great achievement for the not-for-profit organisation and means a number of families are now living in comfortable, healthy homes.

ntinues to build for local families

o deserving Nelson families have n handed the keys to their brandw Habitat for Humanity homes, ich will help to unlock a warmer, er and happier life.

Nelson Habitat for Humanity chairperson Rob Silcock says that their aim is for everyone in the world to have a decent, clean, dry home to live in.

dedication for the homes, which located on Kawai St, took place Saturday to welcome the families o their new abodes. Friends, family, d members from the Habitat for manity board all gathered to ebrate the occasion.

“We have two lovely homes for two lovely families, and it’s a great feeling to be able to hand over the keys to their brand-new homes,” he says. “We have now helped 23 families into 23 houses in Nelson, and we take a lot of pleasure from that.”

19

The Ning Ching family, who are the proud new owners of one of the homes, say that they feel “very thankful” for everything that has been done for them. “We have been truly blessed to have been given this opportunity to own our own home,” says husband and father Cung Thla Uk. “When we got the news that we had a Habitat for Humanity home, we were really excited. This is a wonderful thing for my family and we are very happy to be here today.” The proud owners of the other house are the Thian Hlun family, and husband and father John says they are looking forward to moving into their lovely new home. “I would like to express my thanks to Habitat for Humanity and the community who have contributed,” he says. “We are very excited.” The families were presented with native Kowhai trees to plant in their new gardens, and will both be settling into their new homes this week.

Healthcare that is excellent, accessible and caring is the philosophy and practice of Washbourn Medical Centre and its doctors, Lucia Mitchell and Dr Janine Bailey. The premises have been refurbished recently and the practice has gained accreditation from the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners – a warrant of fitness for patient well-being and safety. Teamwork and communication are important at the centre and the result is friendly, experienced people, confident in their roles. One of the important services offered by Washbourn Medical Centre is immunisation. Immunisation is an important way of preventing various unpleasant diseases. The Ministry of Health recommends the pneumococcal vaccine for those with chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes and those over 65, to help prevent pneumonia. This vaccine is not funded but can be given with the flu vaccine; which will not be available until April this year as changes have been made to improve coverage against anticipated strains of flu. A recent addition to available vaccines is Zostavax, which provides protection against shingles for those over 50. New patients are always welcome at Washbourn Medical Centre and those interested in immunisation are encouraged to contact the surgery. For ten years, Marnie Brown has been using her skills as a Personal Trainer to help people reach their fitness goals. From the private setting of her Richmond studio, Marnie offers her clients a safe and motivational atmosphere where they can gain one on one advice and encouragement on their journey to becoming healthier. Marnie has a particular interest in rehabilitation and the maturing population, although her services cater to helping all ages maintain their health. Marnie is the only qualified Marnie Brown provider of Gravity training in the Nelson Tasman Region, a system that utilises the four components of fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular and flexibility, into one effective workout. Marnie also makes use of the Richmond hills and local pool to benefit her client’s, and runs a weekly Sit and Be Fit class at AMI Nelson Suburbs Football Pavilion, which works on strength and flexibility, aimed at older people and those going through rehabilitation. Marnie says she loves seeing people achieve results, or even make small changes that suit their everyday life, so for more information, give her a call today. This is an exciting time for me as I take up my role as National List MP based in West Coast-Tasman. I take my position very seriously, knowing the things I do make a real difference to individuals and communities. From our family contracting business and farm, to my local government experience, I have a good perspective of how they impact each other. Being a woman in local government certainly showed me that we need more young women to get involved, something I have always encouraged. My role as the West Coast’s first female Mayor grew from being involved first in community, then on a Board of Trustees. What a great training ground! For me going forward, my focus is on access to high speed internet, filling in the cell phone reception gaps, safer roads, always aiming higher for educational achievement and delivery, quality health care and housing, and an effective judicial system. But I fully understand that only with successful businesses can these things be made possible. If businesses succeed so too does NZ.

The one-on-one time doesn’t end once they’ve settled in, every single day, Charlotte spends time with each dog, giving them a cuddle, playing fetch, whatever they enjoy doing, owners even have the option of getting their pup bathed and brushed. To ensure the dogs safety throughout the day, Charlotte provides constant supervision whenever they

are outside, and always has two helpers on hand during busy periods, “just so we can do more than feed them and clean their kennels.” With fifteen play areas available and the use of two paddocks, Spring Grove Kennels and Cattery has an abundance of space for your pet to snooze, play and interact with their fellow canine friends. From 8am until 11am, the dogs are given the freedom of the exercise areas, then from 11am until 3pm, during the hottest part of the day, they are brought into their kennels for some cool shade, and then it’s back out to play until home time or dinner. Charlotte is looking forward to making some major improvements to the business, including the introduction of music to the kennels and play equipment for the outdoor areas, such as miniature pools for those dogs that love water. With a love of animals and experience as a volunteer for the SPCA and running a small pet-sitting service Charlotte wants nothing more than to give your animals a pleasant stay while you’re away. The kennels and cattery also offers accommodation for smaller animals too, including guinea pigs, budgies and rabbits. For more information, contact Charlotte today on 541 8361.

Brendan Dugan live He’s an icon in New Zealand’s country music industry and he’s going to be in Nelson this Friday for a one-off concert. If you’re a lover of country music, especially the deep rich tones of artists such as Johnny Cash, you will not want to miss the opportunity to enjoy a night of live music from Brendan Dugan. Brendan’s passion for music has been with him since his childhood years, and it was in 1968, on a New Zealand television show that he became a star overnight. Since then he has worked with a number of well known New Zealand musicians and is loved for his baritone sound. As operations manager for Club Waimea, Jan Phipps is thrilled to be able to present this performance to club members and the public, as her first live entertainment act since taking on the role. Brendan

is currently performing at other venues in New Zealand and will be entertaining Richmond on Friday, February 19, from 7pm, his only concert in the top of the South. Alongside fellow country musician, Tony Wellington, Brendan will be performing a collection of Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash songs during a three hour concert. Tickets are available now for just $20, and can be purchased from the Club Waimea office or bar. Tickets will also be available on the night at the door. A courtesy van will be available on the night but bookings are essential, and if you’re thinking of having dinner in the restaurant before the show, please remember to book a table. You don’t have to be a club member to enjoy the concert and families are welcome to attend too.

From the presidents desk Whew! It’s been a really hot month. Congratulations to Jean McKenzie on her selection into the Nelson Women’s outdoor bowls rep team. What a great achievement being in the company of world champion Jo Edwards, and off to play in Wellington soon. Also, well done to Colleen Kempton for organising another successful two day women’s invitation bowls tournament at our bowls club. I would like to thank my Vice President, Kevin McKenzie, on organising the recent clean up working bee, where we were able to off-load unwanted stuff to the dump by the skip-full. To our Operations Manager Jan Phipps, a big thank you for efforts so far in securing bookings for farewells, weddings and the usage of our conference rooms. It has had a positive increase of revenue which is what our club

needs. If you have any ideas re shows, entertainment etc, please contact Jan. All of our sports groups are back after the Xmas - New Year break, so good luck for 2016. I attended the sports and executive meetings last week and we are very lucky to have a group of people with our club’s interests at heart. You will see improvements happening within our club and the executive and board are putting a R&M plan together for our club to go forward. This week we have the Brendon Dugan show. Please support it as this is hopefully the start of many. However, if there is no support, then we will have to try some other form of income for your club. Enjoy your club. Kindest regards, David J Birdling President

WEDNESDAY 17 February 2016

SPORT With the water temperatures averaging a very warm 22 degrees in the bay, it makes fishing a little hard at the moment. Waitangi Day holiday proved to be calm and warm, so we headed to the spat farm to check out the kingfish action, as there is always a chance of a good fight with these fish. Arriving at our destination at 6.45am, we pulled up next to a marker at the edge of the spat farm, and used stick baits and poppers in the water to see if there was any interest. Within the first three casts, a kingfish took the lure and gave our daughter a good fight. Although only a rat, (smaller than the legal 75cm), Sophie enjoyed the thrill of pulling in her first kingfish. It had foul-hooked itself on its back,

www.shuttersport.co.nz

so took us a bit to get the lure out before a quick photo and a release back into the water. We trolled a bit to another location, and again what felt like a monster kingi took our lure quickly. However, within three minutes it had pulled itself free, with my brand new lure with it. Frustrating as it was, we kept trying, but had no further luck. We headed back in, and drifted for a few kawahai after coming across a bird work up, and we managed two small fish which will be nice for sashimi tonight. All in all, although we didn’t come back with much, it was a beautiful day on the water. Email us at mail@dawnbreakers. co.nz if you are interested in joining our club.

O’Connor century sets up Wanderers for big win

Fishing for kingfish in Tasman Bay on Waitangi Day.

A dashing unbeaten 130 by Taylors Contracting Wanderers’ opener Joe O’Connor set up a comprehensive win against Car Company Stoke-Nayland in their Nelson premier oneday club cricket game at the Marsden Rec on Saturday. Joe smashed 10 fours and four sixes in his impressive, matchwinning knock to help Wanderers reach 289 for five in their 50 overs.

Tom Cross also batted well, contributing a typically hardhit 49 that included five sixes. Stoke-Nayland made an encouraging start to their run chase with openers Kurt Pahl (28) and Chris Dittmer (42) but none of the batsmen were able to produce the big innings their team needed to get them across the line. Stoke-Nayland was dismissed for 214 with 1.1 overs remain-

ing. Adam Leonard was the best of the Wanderers bowlers taking three for 34. Dan Cooper took three for 43 and Dean Hawley two for 37. In other games, Athletic College Old Boys beat Nelson College by six wickets at the Botanics and Post Boy Hotel Wakatu beat Bar 321 Waimea Toi Toi United by five wickets at Victory Square.

Simon Bloomberg Gordon Sloane is expecting to see some amazing scenery, meet new friends and experience pain and suffering, when he rides in the 3000km Tour Aotearoa cycle ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff starting on Sunday. But what the popular Nelson multisport athlete really hopes to achieve during the epic off-road tour is to raise as much money as possible for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Gordon is one of the many riders on the tour who is supporting a charity and he is asking people to make a donation to the hospice if he can complete the ride in under 30 days. “When I thought about doing it as a charity ride, the first organisation that came to mind was the hospice,” Gordon says. “I don’t have any links or ties with it - it’s just that they do such a great job for the community.” Gordon is confident he will be able to complete the selfsupported journey in less than 30 days although he knows there will be plenty of challenges along the way. The 3000km route will traverse some of the country’s remotest roads and tracks as well as many of the new cycle ways, including the Tasman Great Taste Trail. “I’ve been training for about three months and done some really long rides to get up to speed. But there’s also things like the weather to contend with. When I did one of my training rides through the Rainbow, it was so windy I had to walk my bikes across

the bridges because I was worried about getting blown into the river. “But that didn’t help because it was so windy it blew my bike off the ground. I had to lie across it to hold it down - it was incredible.” Gordon has set-up a new titanium-framed bike especially for the tour and it includes extra water bottle holders, aerobars and bags that fit neatly into the bike’s frame to make it more aerodynamic. The whole set-up, including a tent, sleeping bag and spare clothes, weighs 25kg. Gordon says all riders must carry a spot tracker and their progress can be followed on a web-site touraotearoa.nz. Riders also have to take a selfie with their bikes at 30 specified locations and send it to the race organisers to “prove they

were there”. Gordon starts in the first of three waves of 100 riders at Cape Reinga on Sunday. The second wave leaves on February 23 and the third on February 26 to avoid congestion at the Hokianga Harbour ferry crossing, which is one of five boat rides included in the tour. If anyone wants to donate to Gordon’s hospice ride email gordon@naturalchoice.org.nz for details of a bank account. Gordon is covering all of his own expenses for the tour and all donations will be paid to the hospice. Another Nelson cyclist, Jill Clendon, is also fundraising during the ride, nominating Achilles International NZ as her charity.

Mike Pero Nelson Giants captain Sam Dempster joined forces with his two younger brothers, Aaron and Nathan, to win the Burger King 3x3 Quest Tour three-on-three basketball tournament at the Tahunanui Beach Reserve tennis courts on Saturday. The Dempster’s Team Stoke won the open men’s final played in hot, sunny conditions against Team James Anderson 22-10, to secure a place in the national final of the series in Auckland’s Aotea Square on April 2. The winner of that tournament will receive an all expenses paid trip to the World Tour Masters in Beijing. “It seemed to be a good day out,” Nelson Basketball Association general manager Pete McNae says. “There were 22 teams and there were very good numbers through the teenage boys and girls, although there were no entries in the open women section, which was a bit disappointing.” The Burger King 3x3 Quest Tour was making its third stop in Nelson in the last three years, with another seven events scheduled throughout the country before the national final in April. Yung’s Jordan Lindbom, Sam Seelen and Tony Jenkins beat 2K’s Max Darling, Josh Friend, Lachie McNae and Emil Friend in a tight under-18 boys’ final 11-10. Sparklers won the under-14 girls grade. Warriors won the under-14 boys. The Girls won the under-16 girls. Another One won the under-16 boys and 1910 won the under-18 girls.

Tasman Resource Management Plan Proposed Plan Change 60 Rural Land Use And Subdivision Policy Review

Request for Information Arboricultural Maintenance Services within Tasman District

Water restrictions

The Council has prepared amendments to the Tasman Resource Management Plan, known as Proposed Plan Change 60: Rural Land Use and Subdivision Policy Review. This Plan Change reviews and updates the policy and rules for rural land use and subdivision. The proposed amendments ensure greater protection of productive capacity, allow for flexibility of use and maintain rural character – while offering greater choices for landowners. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of any of the proposed Change. Submissions can be sent to the Environmental Policy Manager, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by the Council until 4.00 pm on Monday 14 March 2016. Submission forms are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Amendments After submissions have closed, the Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support of or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to the Council. The Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Availability of Proposed Amendments The proposed amendments are available to view at the Council’s Richmond office; Motueka, Takaka and Murchison service centres; Richmond, Motueka and Takaka libraries; or online at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/trmp-proposed-changes. Submission forms are also available. For more information or advice on these amendments, please contact Mary Honey, Ph. 03 543 8397 or Email: mary.honey@tasman.govt.nz. Update Pages to the Plan Update No. 53 to the Plan, consisting of amendments to the text and maps, will be available as soon as possible. For enquiries concerning the update or availability of the Plan, please contact Pam Meadows, Ph. 03 543 8581 or Email: pam.meadows@tasman.govt.nz or one of the Customer Services staff.
